Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Transport, Tourism and Sport, Timmy Dooley TD, has congratulated Olive Loughnane on her achievements in sport and wished her well for the future.
Deputy Dooley was reacting to today’s announcement that Olive Loughnane will retire from competitive athletics having represented Ireland for over 12 years.
“The initial reaction to Olive’s retirement is gratitude tinged with disappointment. Olive gave us some great days over the last 12 years, not least winning a silver medal in the 20km walk at the 2009 World Championships.
“To represent your country at four consecutive Olympic Games is an outstanding achievement in any terms. To do it in such a physically demanding sport reflects the determination, hard work and talent that Olive has.
“Olive has been a shining example and great role model for athletes throughout the country. She has also been a great source of inspiration for many young girls who had a hero they could identify with.
“I wish Olive and her family all the best as the next stage in her career.”
