Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Transport, Tourism and Sport, Timmy Dooley TD, has welcomed today’s announcement that a new flyover at the N7 in Newlands Cross will proceed.
Deputy Dooley said the €282 million project will provide a much needed stimulus to the economy along with a similar project on the N11 between Arklow and Rathnew.
“This is a very positive announcement and will provide a guaranteed 1,000 construction jobs as well as countless other spin-off jobs for suppliers and the service industry.
“The flyover at Newlands Cross will also eliminate the last set of traffic lights between Belfast and Cork/Limerick/Waterford. It will ease the huge bottleneck that currently exists at the junction and make freight deliveries a lot easier, for example, as well as taking as about 20 minutes off the journey between Dublin and Cork, Limerick or Waterford.
“Fianna Fáil has continuously called for a stimulus package to be introduced by the Government to kick-start the domestic economy. A funding stream needs to be established to provide finance for these projects, Public Private Partnerships like this may reignite similar capital projects.
“When I met with the European Investment bank in Luxembourg recently, I emphasised to them the importance of a renewed focus on strategic infrastructure products. With this in mind I would like to see the Government prioritise the N17 Gort to Tuam motorway and N25 New Ross bypass. I would hope that today’s announcement can lead to these projects coming on stream in the next 12 months.”
