Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Sport Timmy Dooley TD has congratulated Team Ireland on the impressive performance at the Special Olympics in Athens describing their 107 medals as “superb”.

Deputy Dooley said: “This has been a genuinely stunning two weeks for the 126-strong Team Ireland and is recognition of years of hard work on the part of all of the athletes and their coaches.”

“It is an incredible achievement for Ireland and I know the communities of all athletes across the country are extremely proud of their success in areas ranging from athletics, to basketball and gymnastics.

The Special Olympics in Athens is the largest sporting event taking place in the world this summer with 7,500 athletes from 185 countries competing.

Deputy Dooley concluded: “Team Ireland was supported by 200 Irish volunteers who ensure the games went smoothly over the last two weeks in Athens and a special thanks must go them.  As well winning over 100 medals there are dozens of place ribbons for that the athletes to be proud of.”
