Stephen Donnelly, Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Brexit has welcomed the announcement that the Oireachtas intends to invite Brexit chief negotiator Michel Barnier to address the joint houses of the Oireachtas.

Deputy Donnelly met with the Ceann Comhairle several weeks ago to discuss a series of Oireachtas engagements on Brexit. It has been proposed that several sittings of the joint houses would happen to allow key figures in the Brexit negotiations to address the houses on Brexit and Ireland’s concerns.

Deputy Donnelly commented, “Inviting Michel Barnier address the joint houses of the Oireachtas is a very welcome move. A formal invitation should be issued to Mr Barnier as soon as possible considering the timeframe for the Brexit negotiations. It’s important that TD’s and Senators get the opportunity to engage with Mr Barnier at the start of the negotiation process, before crucial decisions on Ireland’s future are made.

“EU leaders will gather for a summit this Saturday where they will outline the main negotiation priorities for the union. It’s important that Mr Barnier is given the opportunity to address the Oireachtas on the implications of these negotiation positions once they are unveiled. Representatives from all political parties should be given the opportunity to engage with Mr Barnier so that they can give their feedback on the primary negotiation positions.”
