Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Environment, Barry Cowen TD, has called on the Taoiseach and Minister for Environment to state whether they agree with Minister Damien English who told today’s Morning Ireland that he felt the bonus system within Irish Water is acceptable.
Deputy Cowen commented: “Many people throughout the country would have been shocked to learn yesterday that top managers within Irish Water are facing five figure bonuses, while even staff reported as needing to improve could receive a bonus of up to 9% of their salary.
“This is completely unacceptable but it seems the Government is happy to wring its hands and simply blame management at Irish Water.
“Comments from Minister Damien English on radio this morning stating it was acceptable for bonuses to be paid out will have angered thousands of families throughout the county who have watched this whole expensive charade unfold and who are going to pick up the tab through unfair water charges next January.
“Is it now Government policy to support this gold-plated bonus driven culture at Irish Water? The silence from the Taoiseach and Minister Alan Kelly has been deafening. They need to confirm whether or not Minister English reflects their views on this issue?
“Former Minister Fergus O’Dowd is right in describing Irish Water as an unmitigated disaster. It is moving from one crisis to the next and there is no political leadership being shown. We need answers fast as to what the Government’s strategy is and whether it will support the roll-out of this outrageous bonus system.”
