Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Health Billy Kelleher is urging Health Minister Leo Varadkar to intervene in the crisis that has crippled Beaumont Hospital and continues to deteriorate.

Deputy Kelleher said: “The reports coming out of Beaumont Hospital are appalling. The overcrowding situation at the Emergency Department has escalated to the point where people are being discouraged from showing up.   The INMO has called for the Hospital to the taken off call because the situation is so bad.

“From what I’ve heard Beaumont Hospital doesn’t just have a trolley problem anymore, it has seriously sick patients waiting in chairs for hours on end.  The INMO has called for an urgent HIQA inspection at the hospital on the grounds that it is unsafe and patients are at serious risk but the INMO was advised HIQA does not have the resources.  Frontline staff at Beaumont Hospital are under enormous pressure and the situation has gone from bad to worse with no signs of improving.

“I am urging Minister Varadkar to convene a meeting with senior HSE official, management and Beaumont Hospital and staff representatives as a matter of urgency to see what can be done to bring the crisis under control.  We are in the midst of a busy period for the health services in general but it is disgraceful that one of the main emergency departments in our capital city is simply not accessible.”
