Fianna Fáil Justice spokesperson, Jack Chambers TD, has said the comments from Retired Comdt. Cathal Barry today have highlighted the sheer neglect Fine Gael have toward our Defence Forces.

Deputy Chambers commented, “The comments from Retired Comdt. Cathal Barry are stark and unprecedented for a member of his rank and experience. The comments tell us what we all thought and heard from the loved ones of Defence Force members. Morale and confidence among our Defence Forces is at an all time low. Like many of the major issues of the day, the government are ignoring this crisis.

“In April men and women serving our country were delayed from returning home from abroad following the completion of a UNDOF mission. This was deeply disrespectful to both members serving and their families after six long months away. It is a small example of the lack of respect repeatedly shown from the Department and Minister.

“The Taoiseach, and his Minister for State, Paul Kehoe, have repeatedly let down Defence Forces personnel. They cannot continue to neglect members who are proud to serve our Country. Comdt. Barry’s comments should be heard by government but I fear they will not be,” concluded Deputy Chambers.
