Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Primary Care John Brassil says that the Programme for Government commitment of a decisive shift in health service practice to primary care is not supported in the new HSE Service Plan
“Just €4.5 million is being allocated for new developments in primary care next year. That amounts to an increase of 0.5% – and it’s being held back by the Department of Health for termination of pregnancy services”, said Deputy Brassil.
“Beyond that, there are no new measures for primary care. Indeed on a like for like basis, as a share to the HSE budget, it is falling from 6.9% to 6.6%.”
“Robust and active primary and community care is seen as playing an essential role in enhancing health outcomes and limiting costs. A strong primary and community care system will be invaluable for preventing the development of conditions that could ultimately require acute hospital care. Sadly the 2019 Service Plan is not advancing the primary care agenda.”
