Fianna Fáil TD for Carlow – Kilkenny Bobby Aylward is calling strongly for the Post Office service in Inistioge to be retained following the notification by An Post that they are considering the future of the office.
Deputy Aylward commented, “The announcement that An Post is considering the permanent closure of the post office in Inistioge will come as distressing news to the local community. I have written to the Chairman of An Post, as well as other members of the board and executive, urging them in the strongest possible terms to retain this vital service.
“The people of Inistioge are to be commended as they have been very active on the issue and I have received correspondence from many members of the community pleading for the service to be retained. I also know that there are members of the community that are ready, willing and committed to facilitating the postal service within their business premises’ for the foreseeable future.
“The post office in Inistioge is a trusted financial service provider at the heart of the town which provides a crucial service to members of the community as well as an important social outlet in a rural setting. The closure will force people, who rely on Inistioge Post Office to pay bills and collect social welfare payments, to travel out of the town to avail of a service elsewhere. This will be a struggle for older people in particular and will also negatively affect the local economy.
“I am appealing to any interested parties to make a submission to An Post to save the postal service in Inistioge before the deadline of 31 July 2015 as per the recently erected customer notice.”
