Fianna Fáil TD for Cork South Central Michael McGrath has said that Cork jobseekers are clearly not a priority for this government. Despite there being over 50,000 people on the Live Register in Cork city and county, only one of the forty four one-stop-shop services set up nationwide for jobseekers is situated in Cork. The only Intreo office in Cork is situated in Cobh.
“It’s completely unacceptable that a city as large as Cork has only one Intreo office to cater for the needs of more than 50,000 people who are looking for work. Cork is being left behind by this Minister, who has already opened ten such offices in Dublin”, commented Deputy McGrath.
“Minister Burton announced the establishment of the one stop shop Intreo service to much fanfare, however jobseekers in Cork are losing out because of there is only one office to serve the entire city and county. The service is designed to provide jobseekers with information on retraining and employment opportunities. However, this crucial service is not available to the vast majority of jobseekers in Cork.
“This Government constantly claims that job creation is its number one priority, yet the fact that it expects one office to cater for 53,328 people clearly demonstrates its true position on the crisis. This is another example of Government lip service without any real substance. If the Minister is serious about tackling the jobs crisis and has faith in the Intreo service she needs to ensure that more offices are opened in Cork to cater for people on the Live Register in this city and county.
Deputy McGrath concluded, “I’m urging Minister Burton to look beyond Dublin and to afford jobseekers in Cork the same opportunities as she is giving jobseekers in the capital. There is a real need for additional Intreo offices in Cork given the size and population of the county. If she genuinely believes in this service she should ensure its successful roll out of more offices in other areas across this city and county”.
