Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Education Thomas Byrne TD has said he is astonished at the lack of detail given by Minister Richard Bruton in relation to his plan for 42 new schools.

Deputy Byrne made the comments after asking Minister Bruton in the Dáil to set out the location of these new schools. The Minister was unable to provide any clarity regarding where these schools will be located.

Deputy Byrne said, “Minister Bruton announced a new school building programme last April to much fanfare. He committed to delivering 42 new schools with some of these due to open in September of next year. I have been trying to get some further detail from Minister Bruton since his announcement to no avail.

“I specifically asked Minister Bruton in the Dáil to set out where these 42 new schools will be located. There are many parents around the country wondering whether their children will be able to attend one of these new schools. They are delaying making decisions on the future of their children’s education while they await these details.

“I was astonished by the answer given by Minister Bruton in the Dáil. He sidestepped my question entirely and could not set out where a single one of these schools will be located.

“There is no substance whatsoever to the announcement made by Minister Bruton last month. It’s ridiculous that no site has been selected for new schools that the Minister says will open in September of next year,” concluded Deputy Byrne.
