Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan Monaghan Niamh Smyth has called on the government to rectify the waiting lists which has seen some women waiting over six months for appointments from the CervicalCheck programme.
Deputy Smyth said “There is huge concern among my constituents in Cavan Monaghan as they are waiting over six months in some cases before receiving appointments. There is a fear tests may need to be re-carried out, as they sit for so long in laboratories without being seen.
“As my own party leader has explained, it has taken 93 days for laboratories to report on smear tests as cytology labs do not have the resources to meet demand.
“I met one woman in my advice clinic who had a test conducted in October of last year. She is yet to hear back on the results. There is a genuine fear from her and others in Cavan Monaghan that they may have to undertake a new round of tests before the cytology labs can assess them.
“The government must give clarity to these women and provide the resources to ensure tests do not have to be resat and the proper results and treatment are provided in a timely manner,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
