Fianna Fáil Justice Spokesperson Niall Collins TD has welcomed confirmation that a Commission of Investigation is to be established to investigate the allegations of malpractice made by Sergeant Maurice McCabe.
Deputy Collins commented, “Fianna Fáil has supported Sergeant McCabe in his efforts to be heard and have his concerns about alleged malpractice taken seriously. That battle was much more difficult than it should have been and it took too long, but the announcement today that a Commission of Investigation is being established under the leadership of Mr Justice Kevin O’Higgins is very welcome and represents vindication for Sergeant McCabe.
“The controversies surrounding An Garda Síochána in 2014 have been disruptive and have definitely had a negative effect on morale within the service. My hope would be that with this Commission getting to the bottom of the McCabe allegations and with a new Garda Commissioner in place, 2015 can be a period of renewal for the Gardaí.
“Fianna Fáil welcome the GRA’s commitment that all serving Gardaí will co-operate fully with the Commission and we wish Mr Justice O’Higgins well in his work.”
