Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Trade Niall Collins TD has condemned Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to annex large parts of the occupied West Bank if re-elected as Prime Minister of Israel.

Commenting Deputy Collins said, “I condemn the announcement by Benjamin Netanyahu to annex large parts of the occupied West Bank if he is re-elected as Prime Minister of Israel. It is evident that Mr Netanyahu is putting his re-election ahead of the peace process.

“This is deeply disappointing and underscores that Mr Netanyahu’s is more concerned with electoral gain than actually finding a sustainable and long-lasting solution to the conflict in the Middle East.

“Moreover, such a move, if acted upon, would be a flagrant breach of international law. It is therefore imperative that the EU and the wider international community make clear to Mr Netanyahu that such a move would not be tolerated.

“The Middle East peace process has been at a standstill for a number of years now and announcements such as this are inflammatory and only serve to put the two-state solution further beyond reach.

“It is therefore imperative that EU and international community send a very clear message to Israeli authorities that they cannot continue along this path and that these brazen and deliberate breaches of international law will not be ignored”.
