Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Justice Niall Collins has welcomed the garda crackdown on gang criminals in Dublin and has called for cross-party political leadership in stamping out paramilitary criminality.
It follows another series of raids and arrests in the city today in the aftermath of the funeral of Alan Ryan in Donaghmede two weeks ago.
Deputy Collins said, “People in Dublin and right across the country were left angry and disgusted by the disturbing scenes and brazen disrespect of the law at the funeral of Alan Ryan two weeks ago. We cannot have a situation where funerals or public events are hijacked for shows of force related to gangland crime, a point which I made in the Dáil yesterday.
“The gardaí must be commended for their crack down on gang crime in the last two weeks. I want a guarantee from the Minister for Justice Alan Shatter that the gardaí will be given all of the resources necessary to ensure that this operation is a success.
“I am also calling for strong cross-party leadership so that we can stand up to these thugs and show them that there is no place for their brand of criminality in Irish society. The Justice Minister has my full support, and that of my party, in prioritising this matter.”
