Fianna Fáil’s Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs & Trade Niall Collins has called on Fine Gael TDs to follow the lead of their MEPS who have issued a statement calling for a review of the situation in Hungary to determine if there has been a breach to EU values and for appropriate action to be taken if a breach has occurred.
Deputy Collins said, “This week Fine Gael MEPs issued a statement calling for the situation in Hungary to be reviewed. Given the anti-democratic actions of Victor Orbán and his party Fidesz, I welcome this move. I have raised the current situation in Hungary on the floor of the Dáil and by way of parliamentary question and I am now calling on Fine Gael TDs, and in particular the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Simon Coveney, to not shy away from following the lead of their MEPs.
“The reality is that the actions of Prime Minister Orbán are posing a threat to not only Hungary itself but also to the European Union as a whole and they cannot be allowed to go unchecked by our own Government.
“Fine Gael is in the same European grouping as Fidesz, but the gravity of what is happening in Hungary means that this should not deter TDs from speaking out or formally raising this matter at EU level. Fine Gael TDs cannot and should not be on the fence when it comes to defending European values and ideals and the fundamental principles of democracy and human rights”.
