Fianna Fáil Environment Spokesperson Niall Collins has expressed concerns about the Government’s radical u-turn on its own policies on meeting the challenges of climate change.
Deputy Collins was commenting after the Environment Minister Phil Hogan said his Government would not be pushing ahead with a climate change bill as promised in the Programme for Government.
“We will publish a climate change bill which will provide certainty surrounding government policy and provide a clear pathway fro emission reductions, in line with negotiated targets” – Fine Gael/Labour Programme for Government
Deputy Collins commented, “I believe we need to take a balanced approach with climate change policy to address environmental concerns in a way that does not impact on growth and job creation in the farming and industrial sectors.
“What Minister Hogan appears to be doing is just dismissing environmental concerns outright and denying the impact of climate change on our domestic economy. I am calling on him to publish the climate change bill he promised to publish, and allow the Dáil to have a constructive debate on the matter.”
