Fianna Fáil TD for Wexford James Browne says he is alarmed by media reports that the future of the Wexford rail service is in doubt.
Deputy Browne has called on Minister for Transport Shane Ross to set out his vision for the future of Ireland’s rail infrastructure. The Fianna Fáil TD says the development of the Wexford rail service must form part of the Ministers strategy.
“Today it was reported that Iarnród Éireann is facing an enormous challenge in keeping our rail network moving. The report highlights that officials have mooted the possibility of closing the Wexford rail line south of Gorey as a cost saving measure. This cannot be allowed to come to pass,” said Deputy Browne.
“Minister Ross needs to come forward and set out his plan for securing our rail network. The Minister has been lacklustre to date and has shown little interest in his transport brief. We urgently need to see a change of attitude on the Ministers behalf. He needs to come forward with actual solutions for our rail network.
“The transport sector was completely overlooked in Budget 2017 after Minister Ross failed to secure any meaningful additional resources. Now less than two weeks later it transpires that Minister Ross has been sitting on an explosive report which raises serious questions for the future of our rail network. The question has to be asked, why didn’t Minister Ross push for additional resources given the serious issues facing the transport sector?
“Numerous international holiday guides point out that the Wexford rail line is one of the most scenic journeys in Europe. People in the local community rely on the route and it is an important piece of infrastructure for our tourism industry. The service cannot be allowed to be diminished. Instead we need to see investment to secure the future of the Wexford rail line,” concluded Deputy Browne.
