Closure of Debenhams a major blow for 2,000 employees – Troy

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Robert Troy has said the closure of Debenham’s eleven Irish stores and concessions is a major blow to the 2,000 direct and indirect employees based around the country.

The company has been a feature of the Irish retail landscape for over twenty years following its purchase of the original Roches Stores network.

Deputy Troy said, ““Firstly, my thoughts go out to the employees, their families and all those affected by this devastating news. There’s little doubt that these workers are facing into an uncertain future after receiving this notice.

“Employees have been through the mill over the past couple of years, with the threat of job losses constantly hanging over them. Today’s news, on top of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis is devastating for them.

“Minister Humphreys and Minister Doherty will need to establish what options and supports will be available to the Debenhams workers, in particular once the twelve-week COVID-19 pandemic payment ends.

“Importantly, retraining and upskilling opportunities should be made available to them, once the COVID-19 crisis restrictions are lifted,” he concluded.
