Fianna Fáil General Election candidate for Dublin Fingal Lorraine Clifford-Lee has described the remarks made by a Sinn Féin election candidate in relation to the murder of Garda Detective Jerry McCabe as ‘disgusting’.
Clifford-Lee made the comments after Louise O’Reilly, the Sinn Féin General Election candidate in Dublin Fingal, refused to condemn the murder of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe during a discussion on RTÉ Radio 1 earlier today.
“I was deeply alarmed by the comments made by Louise O’Reilly on national radio earlier today. When asked if she condemned the brutal murder of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe she sought to deflect the question. When she was pressed on the issue she went on to allude that the people of Dublin Fingal do not care about the murder of Gardai,” said Clifford Lee.
“This couldn’t be further from the truth. I know from engaging with people on the ground in Dublin Fingal that they are deeply concerned with the difficult job that Gardai are expected to do day in and day out. They recognise that Gardai are under enormous pressure. Communities across Dublin Fingal were shocked following the murder of Garda Tony Golden in Louth and there was an outpouring of grief in the area at the time.
“The comments made by Ms O’Reilly were nothing short of disgusting. Why are Sinn Féin representatives so slow to condemn the murder of those that are tasked with upholding the law and protecting our communities? Ms O’Reilly should reflect on the comments she made and the hurt that they have caused,” said Clifford-Lee.
