At this evenings meeting of Dublin City Council, the majority Labour & Fine Gael Council approved the Fianna Fail emergency motion calling on Minister Phil Hogan to reverse his decision to cut funding for “housing adaptation grants”.
I thank all Dublin City Councillors for putting politics aside tonight, recognising the stupidity of the Minister’s decision and for supporting our motion that seeks to secure funding to re-open the grant scheme that is so desperately needed by elderly and sick people in Dublin.
The Emergency Motion : “The elected members of Dublin City Council call on the Minister for the Environment to reverse his decision to cut funding to DCC for “Housing Adaptation Grants for People with a Disability and Mobility Aids / Housing Aids grants for Older People” by 50% in 2013. We call on the Minister to use some of the €100million available to, and unused by, him from Dormant Accounts to re-open these schemes which are vitally important to allow elderly and/or disabled people to continue to live independently. We call on the Manager to immediately re-open the scheme, make applications available to homeowners and not hide the real need for these grants by refusing to accept applications. “ Cllrs Fitzpatrick, Brabazon, Heney, O’Callaghan, McAuliffe & Mahon.
Dublin City Council has recently been forced to close this extremely valuable and much used grant scheme because Minister Hogan cut funding for the scheme by 50% this year yet causing huge hardship to sick and elderly people in the city.
