Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Brexit and Mayo TD Lisa Chambers has welcomed comments made by Nancy Pelosi, US Speaker of the House of Representatives, who said that there would be no US-UK trade deal if Brexit undermined the Good Friday Agreement.
Commenting Chambers said, “I welcome the assurance given by Nancy Pelosi that the US will not countenance a trade deal with the UK if Brexit undermines the Good Friday Agreement. The United States played an integral role in the Good Friday Agreement and their continued solidarity and commitment to this international peace Treaty is very welcome, particularly at this time.
“I also believe that Mrs. Pelosi’s statement sends a strong message to the United Kingdom that their desire to leave the EU cannot be at the cost of the peace process and the Good Friday Agreement.
“Over the coming weeks I hope that UK politics will heed the words of Mrs. Pelosi and that they can reach an agreement on an orderly and sensible Brexit that upholds in full the Good Friday Agreement. Mrs Pelosi’s comments make clear it is not only in Ireland’s interest but the UK’s as well,” concluded Deputy Chambers.
