Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Defence Lisa Chambers has welcomed the appointment by the UN Secretary General of Major General Michael Beary to the post of Head of Mission and Force Commander of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon.
Deputy Chambers commented, “I want to congratulate Major General Beary on this prestigious appointment. His vast experience in the areas of command and peacekeeping make him a valuable asset in the force and reflects the strong Irish presence of peacekeepers in the Lebanon.
“Ireland has a proud record of service and expertise in UN missions in Lebanon since it was established in 1978, with a joint Irish/Finnish battalion stationed there at the moment. Major General Beary’s appointment is a testament to the experience and knowledge he built up through the important roles he previously held in Somalia and South Lebanon.
“This is a proud time for Major General Beary and his family and I wish him great success in this new role”.
