Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Defence Dara Calleary TD has welcomed the publication of a report into the deaths of three Irish peacekeepers in the Lebanon 22 years ago.
Deputy Calleary commented, “For the last 22 years, the families and friends of Fintan Heneghan, Mannix Armstrong and Thomas Walsh have been searching for answers about the deaths of their loved ones.  After what has been a long and painful journey for them, I hope this report today can go some way to vindicating their position and bringing them some closure.
“It is deeply regrettable that three fine Irish soldiers working for peace in Lebanon lost their lives in a situation that could have been prevented.  I wish to join the Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence Alan Shatter in expressing my sorrow to their families, friends and colleagues for the failures that contributed to their deaths.
“This remains a tragic moment in Irish history. While we cannot change what happened in the past, painful lessons have been learnt to ensure a tragedy like this never happens again.”
