Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo Dara Calleary has welcomed the allocation of funding from the Rural Development Programme for another phase of the Monasteries of the Moy Greenway.  €350,000 has been approved for the project, which will see the Greenway rolled out from Ballina to Killala.

Deputy Calleary commented, “The development of the Greenway from Ballina to Killala through Belleek Woods and via Moyne Abbey and Rosserk Abbey will provide a major boost to the north Mayo area.  The success of Greenways in other parts of the country can act as a blueprint for the Moy Valley region and increase our tourism and economic potential.

“The Rural Development Programme has been integral in the revitalisation of rural Ireland and the €350,000 which has been granted for the Killala to Rosserk segment of the Greenway under this scheme will further enhance the regeneration of the area.

“This Greenway will be incredibly important for Ballina but especially for Killala and will hopefully entice many more visitors to explore this hidden gem .However it’s essential that all local landowners are fully consulted and are included in any new developments.

“I want to congratulate all involved in this project-Mayo County Council, Ballina Chamber, Killala Community Council and Mayo North East Leader.  I would be hopeful that more funding would be available in the future and I would like to see the Greenway extended from Killala down along the spectacular North Mayo coast via Lacken, Ballycastle,Belderrig and on into Erris, to capitalise on some of this country’s most scenic trails and views”.
