Mayo Fianna Fáil Deputy Dara Calleary has extended his deepest sympathies to the family and friends of former Fianna Fáil TD John Carty.

Deputy Calleary said, “It was a real privilege to know John. He was wise, witty and always had a kind word for everyone. I had the honour to call him a close friend and mentor.

“John was a true Mayo man. He was truly honoured to serve the people of Co Mayo on Mayo County Council, in the Dáil and in the Seanad. He never took a single day of public life for granted. Even since his retirement from politics, he never faltered in his commitment to the people of Mayo.

“John was heavily involved in Ireland West Airport Knock since its inception. He was a close friend of Monsignor Horan and was directly responsible for significant investment in the facility. This will be his standing legacy.

“My thoughts and prayers are with John’s wife Kathleen, their children, extended family and friends at this difficult time. I know he will be fondly remembered by people across Co Mayo. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
