Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo Dara Calleary has called on the IDA to start actively promoting Killala as a site for one of 24 sites for a data centre. The agency has commissioned an analysis to identify sites for this very purpose, and a report is expected before the end of the year.
Deputy Calleary commented, “Some of the key requirements for these data centres are power sources and broadband connections. Not only does the Killala site have access to both of these, it has the transatlantic cable, providing a telecommunications link between Ireland and the US.
“We have seen the huge delays which can be caused to multinational projects when planning permission has not been sought in advance. The recent Apple case in Athenry should act as a catalyst for the IDA to begin promoting shovel ready sites like the one in Killala.
“The Killala site provides an excellent opportunity for multinational companies to set up in Mayo. Not only are they getting a state of the art site, there are excellent communications links and a high quality of life for workers. People in Mayo fully realise the potential on their doorstep and it is time for the IDA to step up to the mark and start promoting this area to foreign investors”.
