Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Education and Skills Thomas Byrne TD has expressed surprise that national advice on school closures was not given by the Minister for Education.
Deputy Bruton said, “During Storm Ophelia, I contacted Minister Bruton urging him to issue guidance to close schools in the areas covered by a red weather alert as issued by Met Éireann. The guidance was eventually issued and was clearly necessary.
“I had assumed that during future red warning weather events that guidance would be issued for schools located in counties covered by a red weather alert. I was shocked today that, over two hours after a red warning was issued for a number of counties and after the time that some children would have to leave for school, the Minister stated that the matter was one for individual schools.
“Fianna Fáil is demanding clear national advice for the remainder of the week for schools from the Minister,” concluded Deputy Byrne.
