Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Education and Skills Thomas Byrne TD has expressed his support for the country’s LGBTI+ teachers ahead of the Pride parade in Dublin.
“I was concerned during the week at reports that some LGBTI+ teachers still feel that they are unable to be open about their sexuality in the workplace.
“Such a situation is just not acceptable in the Ireland of 2018 and I want to assure any teachers who feel this way that I, and the party I represent, are completely on their side.
“Ireland has changed radically in recent decades and as we approach the third decade of the 21st century there can be no place for homophobia, whether overt or covert, in any school, irrespective of ethos.
“The LGBT+ community will be celebrating this weekend and I hope that all Irish people can share in their joy. For my part, I certainly want to express my support and my commitment to ensuring that in all schools LGBTI+ teachers can feel free to be themselves.”
