Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Education, Thomas Byrne TD, has extended his congratulations to the almost 59,000 students who are getting Leaving Cert results today.

Deputy Byrne commented, “Today is a hugely significant day for the almost 59,000 students who are receiving their Leaving Cert results and I wish to congratulate them on two years of hard work.

“It is a great achievement and beginning of a new chapter in their lives. For those who might be disappointed with their results it’s important to avail of support services in the coming days and to remember there are plenty of options available.

“It’s welcome to see such an uptake on the numbers choosing higher level subjects, in particular English, Irish and maths which has led to this year’s students scoring the highest ever CAO points.

“It is still concerning to see 3,700 students fail maths, which has ramifications for access to third level. This is less than in previous years and we need to continue to drive down the number.

“Over the coming days the National Parents Council Post Primary (NPCPP) have a free phone number and online service, manned by Guidance Counsellors, and can provide students and their parents with professional and confidential one-to-one support, advice and guidance on topics such as the points system, rechecks, repeats, CAO procedures and further training options. I would encourage anyone who needs to avail of this help to do so”, he concluded.
