Senator Thomas Byrne with strikers outside the Irish Cement Facility at Platin, Co. Meath
Fianna Fáil Senator for Meath East Thomas Byrne is calling on the Irish Cement Ltd to accept the Labour Court recommendations to pay monies that are due to employees.
‘Today, I visited the workers at their picket of the company at Platin, Co. Meath. There is significant anger and frustration among the workers affected especially as the company are insisting on a pay cut of between 15-18% before any payment is made’ said Senator Byrne.
‘The money owed to the workers in back pay and should be immediate paid to the workers without pre-conditions. Cement Ltd is part of the CRH Group which is one of the world’s largest building materials companies needs to accept the recommendations of the Labour Court. The have been good to this area but it is wrong that workers are being left without pay’ added Senator Byrne.
‘I am also calling on the Department of Enterprise and Jobs to immediately intervene in this situation. The workers have already accepted substantial pay cuts in recent times and have adapted with great flexibility to new working arrangements. It’s now time for the company to show the same support to their workers’ concluded Senator Byrne.
