Following the fantastic news that Dell plans to have Ireland at the centre of its development of cloud computing technologies, creating valuable jobs in the process, Fianna Fáil Seanad spokesperson on Public Expenditure and Financial Sector Reform, Thomas Byrne has reacted with concern to media reports that there is resistance within the Civil Service to the introduction of Cloud Computing for government services.
‘I find it crazy that on the one hand, the Government is committing in its new Programme for Government to ‘make Ireland a leader in the emerging IT market of cloud computing and yet there is no coherent strategy within the civil service in order to implement this in government services.’
‘Obstacles are being placed in front of the Civil and Public Service, preventing them utilising this fantastic piece of technology.’
‘I raised this important issue today in Seanad Éireann and I have called on the Minister responsible, Brendan Howlin, to come into the House and outline clearly how he aims to deal with these obstacles. The Government must not do anything that can diminish Ireland’s capacity to be a world leader in this field.’
