Figures showing the number of rented prefabs at schools increasing by 25% between 2017 and 2016 are a shocking indictment on the stewardship of Education Minister Richard Bruton,” according to the Fianna Fáil Education Spokesperson, Thomas Byrne.

“Minister Bruton talks about Ireland having the best education and training system in the world.  However, his capital budget is under increasing pressure and he is doing little about it.

“Land costs, building costs and school age population are all up substantially. However, the increase in the capital budget for schools has not matched these rises.

“The upshot of the Minister ignoring this underfunding crisis is the sharp rise in prefabs under his tenure. The 25% increase in prefab rentals comes despite the Government stating in 2015 that its five year capital plan would end long term prefab use.

“The Minister needs to accept that his capital budget is insufficient for the job at hand. Not only has it resulted in a 25% increase in prefabs, but the five year capital plan is grossly delayed and many projects promised long before its publication have not even started yet” concluded Deputy Byrne.
