Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Education Thomas Byrne TD says the latest forum announced by Minister Richard Bruton on school admissions is yet another attempt at delaying in dealing with the issue.
Deputy Byrne made the comments after Minister Bruton announced that a forum on religion in primary school admissions is to take place at the end of the month.
Deputy Byrne said, “This issue has already been comprehensively discussed in recent months. The Oireachtas Education Committee heard from all stakeholders regarding school admissions and Minister Bruton has already held a full public consultation on the matter. Despite this Minister Bruton is yet to come forward with legislation to actually deal with the issue.
“The delay in dealing with the problems associated with school admissions is simply unacceptable. I see no good reason why we cannot proceed with legislation now considering the issue has already been discussed and examined in depth. People want to see the Government moving to deal with school admissions, the last thing they need is yet another forum to discuss the same issues over and over again.
“Just last week Fianna Fáil again put forward comprehensive proposals to deal with the problems surrounding school admissions. Minister Bruton should take on board our proposals instead of attempting to delay in dealing with the issue any longer.”
