Fianna Fáil Education Spokesperson Thomas Byrne has accused Minister Bruton of floating ideas on admissions policy without taking any real action to change the current situation.

Reacting to the latest “announcement” on the Baptism barrier, Deputy Byrne said, “Today’s newspaper stories about Minister Bruton’s position on the Baptism barrier are the latest in a long line of “announcements” by the Minister (usually in Monday morning newspapers) in relation to legislation.  While the Minister clearly enjoys talking about the subject, he has entirely failed to take any action to implement change.

“The Oireachtas Education Committee is in the middle of carrying out a consultation on this issue and has held hearings before Christmas and will have further hearings shortly.  Then it is envisaged that we will legislate.

“The only party that doesn’t have a clear policy on this issue is Fine Gael.  Instead of setting up a duplicate process to that being completed by the Education Committee, the Minister would be far better off submitting Fine Gael’s policy to the Committee and letting the Committee get on with its work”.
