Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth has welcomed the Brexit extension to the 31st October 2019 but has warned that significant uncertainty remains for those in the border region.
Deputy Smyth said, “I welcome the decision to grant an extension to the 31st October. An extension is of course much more preferable to a catastrophic no deal Brexit but we are not out of the woods yet. For those of us in Cavan and Monaghan there is still much concern toward Brexit and the collateral damage in our counties.
“The reality is that today we are no clearer as to what type of Brexit we will have than we were a year ago and preparations must continue for all possible outcomes. If there is a hard border we will be the most impacted in Cavan-Monaghan.
“This extension is welcome, but the UK parliament still has to reach an agreement on the terms of the Withdrawal and even if that is achieved it then has to negotiate the terms of a future trading relationship. We are still a long way off from putting this issue to bed,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
