Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin has this week appointed Louth TD Declan Breathnach as the party’s Spokesperson on North – South Bodies & Cross- Border Co-Operation.
Deputy Breathnach commented, “It’s a huge honour to be appointed to this position. I’m looking forward to the challenges and opportunities which this role will bring. As someone who lives close to the border I know only too well the challenges that communities face overcoming social, economic and educational barriers. I want to use this role to help overcome these difficulties.
“I’ve worked on border related issues throughout my time on Louth County Council, and have been heavily involved on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Newry and Mourne District Council and the Louth Local Authorities. I’ll be using this experience to put border related issues on the national agenda in Dáil Éireann.
“It’s now nearly two decades since the Good Friday Agreement. Amazing progress has been made down through the years in bringing communities in the north and south together. However, I believe now is the time to renew our commitment to the ideals of the Good Friday Agreement. I believe much more work needs to be done to achieve cross-border co-operation between institutions in the north and south. This will be a key focus for me,” said Deputy Breathnach.
