Local Fianna Fáil TD John Brassil has said that he is deeply concerned for the workers of Tarbert Power Plant following news today that a series of voluntary redundancies would be sought at the plant.
“This is sad news for the staff working in the plant. A dark cloud will now hang over the entire workforce until this round of redundancies is completed at the end of 2016,” said Brassil.
“Over 20% of the workforce will be made redundant over the next two months. This will have a devastating impact on the families concerned, as well as the entire local community.”
Over the last number of years, there has been a consistent lack of investment in the Tarbert Power Plant, I would hope that the company would commit to future investment at this site in order to grow the workforce again once the implications of the introduction of the Integrated Single Energy Market (I-SEM) late next year become crystalised and fully apparent.”
“I would hope that the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise, and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor will use all the options available to her to ensure that everything that can be done will be done to ensure that re-training options, and employment supports are made available to the workers who will become redundant,” concluded Brassil.
