Flood families frustrated by lack of action on defences – Crowe

Fianna Fáil TD for Clare Cathal Crowe says residents in Springfield are extremely frustrated that essential flood defences have been delayed and they are facing further flood damage to their homes and farms.

Deputy Crowe said, “I have been down visiting the affected residents over the last number of days and the situation facing them is nothing short of heart-breaking. They have all been here before and had hoped that much needed flood defences would be put in place, but a series of objections has resulted in delay after delay and these families are watching helplessly as their homes are filled with flood waters once again. It’s a shocking situation.

“Locals are very frustrated. They are annoyed that the Springfield flood embankment works have been reassessed and are now being subjected to a cost benefit analysis. These are essential defences but have been downgraded because of government overspending in other areas.

“A fresh planning application for a flood embankment will be submitted by Clare County Council within the next month. I am asking potential objectors to give serious consideration to the impact that their submissions has on local residents and farmers”.
