Published on: 17 July 2019

Fianna Fáil TD for Sligo-Leitrim, Eamon Scanlon, has welcomed progression of the Coroners (Amendment) Bill 2018, having led on the Bill for Fianna Fáil in the Dáil.

The Bill has passed all stages in both the Dáil and the Seanad. It is expected to be signed into law by the President soon.

He commented, “Seeing this Bill signed into law will be welcomed by many families in the North West. I have personally met with families touched by this. I welcomed some of those families from Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Donegal who traveled to Leinster House to attend the Dáil debate on this legislation.

“The Bill will introduce changes including strengthening the powers of investigation and reporting held by Coroners. It will also address maternal deaths, perinatal and infant deaths. The Bill will also allow for a wider scope of inquiry at inquest and a number of other provisions.

“This is a sensitive topic and will be emotional for families who have wanted to see these changes for so long,” concluded Deputy Scanlon.
