Fianna Fáil spokesperson Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD has responded to reports that Sinn Féin is now planning to welcome Britain’s Queen Elizabeth more than a year after the Irish people did the same.
He commented, “Sinn Féin got it wrong when they entirely misjudged last year’s state visit by Queen Elizabeth and snubbed then President Mary McAleese. At that time, Deputy Mary Lou McDonald ordered her late colleague Cllr Michael Browne not to welcome Queen Elizabeth to Cashel and he was condemned for properly ignoring the order.
“Simultaneously, Sinn Féin organised a series of protests on the streets of Cork while tens of thousands lined the streets to welcome the visit.
“Nothing has changed in the meantime and now Sinn Féin seeks to portray its decision to follow the lead of all other Irish political parties as a momentous landmark in Irish history. The fact that Sinn Féin would attempt to manipulate the media in this way should come as no surprise.
“However, most Irish people will have been bemused that this represents major breaking news more than a year after they welcomed Queen Elizabeth to our country in good faith.”
