Fianna Fáil TD for Wexford James Browne has hit out at attempts by Irish Rail management to close the rail service between Gorey and Rosslare.
Deputy Browne has warned that any attempts to close the rail service is putting the future of Rosslare Europort at risk and has called on Minister for Transport Shane Ross to intervene in the situation.
Deputy Browne said, “I’m shocked to read recent media reports suggesting that management at Irish Rail are considering closing the rail service between Gorey and Rosslare. This is a vital piece of infrastructure for not only passengers but also for freight services coming to and from Rosslare Europort. Any attempts to close the service will be fiercely resisted.
“The closure of this rail line has come up a number of times in recent years. The issue is debated extensively each time it arises and there is recognition that the service is vital for Wexford and for Rosslare Europort in particular. What’s most worrying is the fact that the Government has already come forward and said that enhancing Rosslare Europort is vital to ensure Ireland maintains its connectivity to Europe post-Brexit, yet now we have a proposal being put forward which would cause enormous damage to the port if it came to pass.
“Minister for Transport Shane Ross needs to make a firm commitment that the Government will not only maintain the Gorey to Rosslare rail link, but also invest in it in the years ahead. The Government needs to recognise that maintaining the rail service is vital for securing the future of Rosslare Europort. The people of Wexford won’t tolerate any attempts to close this rail service,” concluded Deputy
