Fianna Fáil MEP Pat the Cope Gallagher has met with members of the Defence Forces in Dungloe, Co Donegal to press the case for their immediate assistance in dealing with the Gorse Fire in the Upper Rosses covering the triangle between Doochary/Leitir/Dungloe.
“The army is deploying a number of personnel to supplement the Donegal Fire Services in this major effort. Up to 50 personnel will assist firefighters and locals who have been bravely tackling these fires to protect homes and the communities.”
“An army helicopter which can disperse hundreds of gallons of water is to be used to tackle the blaze from the air. This should remain at the region’s disposal until the fires are brought under control.”
Speaking after the meeting Pat the Cope said: “This is welcome but I am concerned that not enough is being done on the part of Minister Shatter to ensure homes are protected. Already the damage that has been caused to forests nearing maturity could run to millions of euro. Farms and fencing that has been provided for REPS have also been lost and wildlife has been wiped out in large sections.
“The firefighters have been tremendous in tackling these fires and their efforts have primarily had to focus on protecting homes. At this stage I think the case is clear for a large-scale emergency response to be put in place that would involve significant numbers of army personnel being trained and deployed as necessary. With an emergency response plan the army could be deployed without delay thus ensuring an immediate response in situations where time is of the essence. There can be little doubt that the region is likely to face this terrible problem again this year with dry months ahead expected.
“If it is proved that these fires were brought about maliciously I believe those responsible must be held accountable and made an example of. Many fine and beautiful areas of the region have been lost in the 24 hours.
In conclusion Pat the Cope called on the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney TD to initiate an investigation of the extent of the damage. “We need to have a full assessment on the ground here. In my view there will certainly be a case for a package of assistance being put in the place for the local farmers and families whose property has been devastated by these fires. In this regard I am inviting the Minister to tour the area by air to view the extent of the damage. I hope the Minister is forthcoming in that regard and I hope he will be making a statement on the matter shortly.”
