Fianna Fáil Senator Catherine Ardagh says that legislative changes are needed as some children are having their passports revoked, effectively leaving them Stateless.

She commented, “I have been contacted by parents of children who have had their passports revoked upon review by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Understandably many parents are very concerned.

“There have been a number of high profile cases in recent times whereby children, who have never lived in any other country, only speak Irish/English and know no other home have faced deportation. The future of these children is dealt with in an arbitrary way whereby it is a matter for the Minister for Justice of the day to use his/her discretion give permission to remain on “humanitarian” grounds.

“This is not good enough and does not treat individuals with respect.

“Previously my party have supported legislation in the Dáil which aims to resolve this problem. However, the government have voted down solutions. I am calling on the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Minister for Justice to bring about changes which resolves this problem for families,” concluded Senator Ardagh.
