Following weeks of silence from Minister for Environment Alan Kelly as the homeless crisis descended into a full scale emergency, the self-styled ‘Action Man’ of Irish politics, Alan Kelly today returned, telling the Irish people that he is doing a good job and that the homelessness emergency is a result of various other people and factors.

Deputy Cowen commented, “Minister Kelly was completely absent in recent weeks as the homeless crisis worsened and escalated into a full emergency. People will therefore be forgiven for being surprised by his triumphant return and declaration that contrary to public belief and the mounting evidence to the contrary, he is actually doing a good job as the Minister responsible for Irish Water and Housing.

“Minister Kelly simply does not understand the extent of the homeless emergency that we are now faced with. This emergency, which began in Dublin, is now rapidly extending to other urban centres across Ireland as predicted.

“Meanwhile Minister Kelly continues to dismiss out of hand the concerns raised by those that have first-hand experience of the emergency. He is refusing to take on board the suggestions raised by the stakeholders who are dealing with this emergency day in and day out.

“Over the weekend we also saw a Labour TD trying to blame homeless charities for exacerbating the homeless emergency. This highlights just how detached this Government has become.

“My hope would be that now he has returned, the Minister will concentrate less on his PR profile and blaming others for the mess in his area of responsibility. He needs to get to grips with the ongoing emergency. Fianna Fáil have published detailed proposals on the rental sector and I would encourage the Minister to read them and take them forward quickly.”
