Fianna Fáil Senator Robbie Gallagher has called upon the Minister for Health to provide greater support for people living with dementia.
Senator Gallagher, who has held meetings with The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, explained, “In Monaghan there are 455 people living at home with dementia and in Cavan there are 558 people at home with dementia.
“Like many people requiring HSE supports under this government services are lacking. Charities, such as the Alzheimer Society, should not be supplementing a failing Fine Gael policy. However, this is the day to day situation.
“Greater supports are required for those with dementia. We have an ageing population. Everyday a further 11 people are diagnosed with dementia.
“I would implore the Minister for Health to work together with his officials to put in place the adequate supports for dementia care in Cavan-Monaghan,” concluded Senator Gallagher.
