Figures obtained by Fianna Fáil this month reveal that over 1,200 families in Dublin’s South City region are currently waiting for an essential home care support package.
Speaking on the matter in the Seanad this week, Fianna Fáil Seanad Group Leader and Dublin South Central General Election candidate, Senator Catherine Ardagh said, “Each of these patients have been evaluated and approved for home care supports, they are therefore clearly in need of the services.
“A great number of those on this waiting list are being cared for in a hospital setting and cannot go home to their loved ones. Over 180 of these families are from my own constituency in Dublin South Central.
“Not only is it dreadful that these families are left in limbo while waiting for a home care package but at a time when hospital beds are in such high demand, extending home care supports would mean there would be hundreds of beds freed up.
“If supports were in place for those awaiting discharge from hospital it wouldn’t only just be a cheaper cost to State in the long run but it would help alleviate the pressure on our already creaking health system.
“Various studies have shown that growing old in your own home is better for physical and mental health. Families want the best for their loved one and if the State can’t step up to meet demand then it must respond.
“These patients are some of the most vulnerable in our society; they deserve to be at home in comfort and with support to maintain their independence not languishing on a waiting list,” concluded the Crumlin based Senator.
