Full-time Public Representative. First elected to the Dáil in 1992. Member of Seanad Éireann 1987-92 on the Administrative Panel. Alderman on Dublin City Council 1985-2003. Lord Mayor of Dublin 1989-90. Vice-chairman Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Affairs, 2002-04 and Chairman Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Heritage and Local Government, 2004-06. Appointed Minister of State at the Department of Education and Science in December 2006 with special responsibility for Lifelong Learning, Educational Disadvantage and School Transport. He is also a Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment.
Born Dublin 1961. Married to Orla O'Brien, three sons and one daughter. Educated St. Paul's College, Raheny, Dublin and TCD (BA, Economics and Politics). Son of the late Charles J. Haughey, former Taoiseach and Dáil Deputy, 1957-92 and grandson of former Taoiseach, Seán Lemass.
