Political Record

Appointed Minister Community, Equality & Gaeltacht Affairs in March 2010. Appointed Minister of State at the Departments of an Taoiseach and Defence as Government Chief Whip in May 2008. Elected to Dáil Eireann on third attempt in 1997 and re-elected in 2002 and 2007.

Previously served as Minister of State at the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs with responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy and Community Affairs from June 2007 until May 2008. Served in other roles: Co-Chair of the British Irish Inter Parliamentary Body, Vice-chair of Oireachtas committee on Foreign Affairs, member of the Forum on Europe, alternative member to the Convention on the Future of Europe.

Born Castlemaine, Co. Kerry November 1947. Educated Presentation Brothers, Milltown, Co. Kerry: St. Patrick's Teachers' Training College, Drumcondra: UCD (BA): TCD (H Dip Ed). Full time Public Representative and former Vice Principal, St. Finian's School, Finglas. First elected 1997.
