Member of Joint Committees on Social, Community and Family Affairs: Environment and Local Government. Party Spokesperson on the Environment with special responsibility for Housing 1994-97.Chairperson of the Oireachtas All-Party Dáil Committee on Social, Community and Family Affairs 1997-2002. Member of Dublin City Council 1985-2002. Former Chairperson of Housing & Traffic Committees and Chairperson of the North West Area Committee 2001-02. Former branch officer and member of National Executive of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association.  He is a brother of Bertie Ahern, former Taoiseach and leader of Fianna Fáil.

Born Dublin December 1944. Married to Helen Marnane, two sons, one daughter. Educated O'Connell School, Dublin, UCD and the College of Commerce, Rathmines, Dublin (DPA, MCIT). Full time Public Representative and formerly an official with CIE. First elected 1992.
